W-A-Y Academy’s mission is “Delivering a blended global learning model to encourage positive self-esteem, academic excellence, and life-long learning for young people in Detroit.” We focus on this mission so that students develop the skills to compete in a global economy and succeed in any post-secondary endeavor. W-A-Y Academy builds on the personal interests of youth and surrounds them with a community of learners using high-powered cyber and hands-on technology, embedded in an engaging, project based learning environment. This model engages students in a mentored community of learning and collaboration that collapses barriers of time and distance, and provides access to scaffold learning.
The curriculum in the W-A-Y Academy is project based, standards focused and proficiency based. In both ELA and Mathematics the Common Core State Standards are used for project design and assessment while the standards from the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations and Michigan High School Content Expectations are utilized for all other content areas, including the ability to create personalized electives based on student interest.
Students in the W-A-Y Academy engage in the curriculum in a variety of ways. Students can complete projects that have been designed by highly qualified content area teachers (known as experts); can work collaboratively with experts to design personalized projects based upon the individual students’s interests; and can work collaboratively to design projects with other students.
